LOCAL PEOPLE POISON AN ELEPHANT IN KATUNGURU VILLAGE

The famous elephant that was always seen walking on the streets of Katunguru was poisoned and found dead. The killers haven’t yet been found but the local shop keepers were the suspects. The elephant was named Mary and was brought up by Marcel Onen the former founder of the Uganda Conservation Foundation Mike Keigwin.

One of the officers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority said the elephant was not poached but was murdered by someone who was not happy about the elephant’s roaming in the village so everything will be done to find the murderers and be bought to justice.

Hunting of wildlife is mostly done in the Kidepo National Park in the northern part of Uganda but in the south western region where there are many parks, poaching for trophies reduced and tourism is the main factor in the area though the wildlife managers are still scared that it would happen again.

The dead elephant was always seen near Mweya Safari Lodge and tourists loved her so much because she was very friendly.
