6 Days Wildlife and Nyungwe Forest National Park Safaris Rwanda

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your guide will be waiting to welcome you. The day begins with a city tour, including a stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a sobering look at Rwanda’s recent history. Explore the royal palace and learn about the ancient Rwandan monarchy, then wander through the bustling Muslim quarter in Nyamirambo. Later, head south to Butare, Rwanda’s cultural heartland. Visit the National Museum and witness performances by the Batwa community, whose music, dance, and pottery offer a glimpse into the lives of Rwanda’s earliest inhabitants. In the evening, settle in for dinner and overnight rest.

Rise early for a morning game drive through Akagera National Park. Watch as the savannah comes alive with wildlife, from zebras and elephants to lions and antelope. The park is also home to over 425 bird species, including African jacanas, shoebill storks, and goliath herons. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast. After lunch, travel back to Kigali, arriving in time for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda’s southwestern region. En route, enjoy scenic views of tea plantations and rolling hills. Upon arrival, check in and head into the forest for an afternoon primate walk. Nyungwe is home to 13 primate species including L’Hoest’s monkey, blue monkey, and large troops of Angola colobus. You may also spot colorful birdlife such as the Rwenzori turaco. Return to the lodge for dinner and a peaceful night surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Before sunrise, set out into Nyungwe Forest in search of chimpanzees. The forest holds the largest population of chimpanzees in Rwanda, with several habituated groups. Watch them forage, interact, and move through the dense canopy with surprising agility. After your encounter, return to the lodge for a late breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, travel north to Ruhengeri, near the tranquil twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

Today is the highlight of the trip. Begin early at Kinigi Park Headquarters with a briefing before entering Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorilla. Trekking can take between one and four hours, depending on the location of the gorilla families. Once found, you will have an unforgettable hour with these gentle giants as they feed, groom, and play in their natural habitat. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch, then journey back to Kigali in the late afternoon.

Spend your final morning exploring Kigali. Visit local art and craft markets, enjoy a walk through the city center, or stop by the Caplaki Handicrafts Cooperative for last-minute souvenirs. After lunch, your guide will transfer you to the airport for your international departure.
