Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers about 331 square kilometers of montane and lowland forest. The park is one of Africa’s oldest ecosystems, estimated to have existed for over 25,000 years. In 1991, it was designated a national park and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its ecological significance and biodiversity.
Bwindi is best known for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. It is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining gorillas, protected through strict conservation practices and controlled tourism. The dense forest terrain gives the park its name and offers a rare experience of trekking through a truly wild habitat. In addition to gorillas, the park also supports chimpanzees, forest elephants, over 350 bird species, and more than 200 butterfly species.
Gorilla Trekking
Guided treks to see mountain gorillas are the park’s main activity. Permits are required and must be booked in advance.
Bird Watching
Bwindi is a top birding destination with species such as African green broadbill, Shelley’s crimsonwing, and short-tailed warbler.
Forest Walks
Take guided hikes to waterfalls, river trails, or local viewpoints for a quieter experience of the forest.
Community Visits
Visit Batwa communities and local villages to learn about traditional forest life and participate in cultural activities.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
Spend more time in the forest with researchers learning how gorillas become used to human presence. This requires a separate permit.
Bwindi can be accessed by both road and air. By road, it takes about 8 to 10 hours from Kampala, depending on which park sector you are visiting: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo. Each sector can be accessed through different routes, often via Kabale or Kisoro.
For quicker access, domestic flights can be arranged from Entebbe to Kihihi (for Buhoma and Ruhija) or Kisoro (for Rushaga and Nkuringo). From the airstrip, a vehicle transfer is required to reach the park.
