Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers about 331 square kilometers of montane and lowland forest. The park is one of Africa’s oldest ecosystems, estimated to have existed for over 25,000 years. In 1991, it was designated a national park and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its ecological significance and biodiversity.

Bwindi is best known for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. It is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining gorillas, protected through strict conservation practices and controlled tourism. The dense forest terrain gives the park its name and offers a rare experience of trekking through a truly wild habitat. In addition to gorillas, the park also supports chimpanzees, forest elephants, over 350 bird species, and more than 200 butterfly species.
