Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It spans approximately 996 square kilometers and protects the central part of the Rwenzori Range, which includes Margherita Peak—Africa’s third highest mountain at 5,109 meters. The park was established in 1991 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its natural beauty and ecological significance.

The Rwenzori Mountains are often referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon” and are known for their glacier-capped peaks, dense montane forests, alpine meadows, and giant heathers. The park is rich in plant and animal species, including endemic birds and mammals not found elsewhere in Uganda. Unlike other mountain ranges in East Africa, the Rwenzoris are not volcanic but are formed by tectonic uplift.
