Overview
This expedition in Rwanda blends two of the most sought-after experiences in East Africa: an intimate encounter with endangered mountain gorillas and the physically demanding, deeply rewarding climb up Mount Karisimbi. From the haunting lessons of the Kigali Genocide Memorial to the mist-covered slopes of Volcanoes National Park, this journey offers both reflection and adventure. The highlights are standing before a silverback gorilla in the heart of a dense rainforest and summiting one of Africa’s highest volcanic peaks.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your guide for a short tour of Rwanda’s capital. You’ll visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant tribute to the country's past, followed by a stroll through Nyabugogo Market and the local handicraft stalls where traditional Rwandan artistry is on full display. In the afternoon, set off for Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), the base town for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Settle into your lodge nestled in the shadows of the Virunga volcanoes.
Rise early for a briefing at park headquarters before setting off into the ancient montane rainforest. Volcanoes National Park is a sanctuary of biodiversity, its slopes cloaked in bamboo forests and tangled undergrowth. As you trek through mist and moss, listen for the rustle of gorillas, the chatter of golden monkeys, and the distant calls of turacos echoing through the canopy.
Meeting a gorilla family in the wild is an experience unlike any other. Watch as they feed, play, or rest under the ferns, their eyes meeting yours in a moment that bridges worlds. After your hour with them, hike back down and return to the lodge to unwind and share stories by the fire.
Today offers another opportunity to visit a different gorilla group, with a new trail and fresh perspectives. The second trek may reveal young gorillas at play, a silverback asserting dominance, or quiet maternal moments in the undergrowth.
After lunch back at the lodge, drive west to the lakeside town of Gisenyi on the northern edge of Lake Kivu. The setting here is serene—three palm-fringed beaches, volcanic backdrops, and the gentle hum of lakeside life. Optional walks along the waterfront or visits to nearby lava fields offer a glimpse into the geological pulse of the region.
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kigali, passing through a landscape woven with lakes, terraced hills, and volcanic peaks. You’ll pause along the way to take in the peaceful views of Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, two crater lakes nestled at the base of the volcanoes. Arrive in Kigali in time for your international flight home, carrying memories of close encounters few travelers ever experience.
