Itinerary
Upon arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll be met by your guide and driven north toward Mount Kenya. If your flight arrives early, enjoy a gentle forest walk near Serena Mountain Lodge, which is perched beside a salt lick that draws elephants and buffalo. For evening arrivals, overnight arrangements will be made in Nairobi. Settle in and prepare for the days of exploration ahead.
Overnight at Serena Mountain Lodge or Nairobi hote
After breakfast, journey toward Samburu, traveling through the fertile farmlands of Timau and into the drier landscapes of northern Kenya. The terrain shifts to a rugged expanse dotted with acacia trees and termite mounds. Samburu’s unique location introduces you to rare species such as Grevy’s zebra, the long-necked gerenuk, and the Somali ostrich. Arrive at the lodge in time to relax before dinner.
Overnight at Sarova Shaba Lodge
Spend the day exploring the Samburu ecosystem. This reserve is home to over 900 elephants, rare birds such as the martial eagle and white-headed vulture, and the endangered pancake tortoise. Game drives wind through riverine forest and dry scrublands, offering a contrast to the grasslands of southern Kenya. Your guide will interpret the behavior of animals and birds alike, from oxpeckers grooming buffalo to crocodiles sunning along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Overnight at Sarova Shaba Lodge
Depart after breakfast and travel south past the Aberdare ranges. As you descend into the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park awaits. Famous for its birdlife, the park is also a sanctuary for endangered black and white rhinos. Lunch is served at the lodge, followed by an afternoon game drive. Look out for flamingoes skimming across the lake, lions resting in the yellow-barked acacia trees, and elusive leopards in the dense bush.
Overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge
Start with an early breakfast, then drive to Menengai Crater, a dormant volcano offering panoramic views of the surrounding highlands. The hike to the crater’s rim takes about two hours and is suitable for travelers with moderate fitness. After your descent, continue to Lake Naivasha and check in at your lodge. In the afternoon, take a boat ride across the lake to Crescent Island, where you’ll walk among giraffes, zebras, and antelopes in a predator-free environment.
Overnight at Lake Naivasha Country Club
After breakfast, travel southwest through the Great Rift Valley to reach the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve. Arrive in time for lunch, then set out on an afternoon game drive. The Mara is teeming with wildlife, and sightings may include prides of lions, large herds of elephants, and herds of wildebeest roaming the plains. Your lodge provides a comfortable base to relax after a day in the wild.
Overnight at Mara Simba Lodge
Spend a full day on safari in the Maasai Mara. With the option to carry picnic lunches, you can extend your exploration into the park’s remote corners. Follow the banks of the Mara River, search for cheetahs in the open plains, or track elephants through the acacia woodlands. Your guide will adjust the route to suit your interests, whether you’re seeking the Big Five or a quiet moment with giraffes against the sunset.
