6 Days Rwanda Gorillas and Lake Kivu Safari

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your guide and transfer into the heart of Rwanda’s vibrant capital. Enjoy breakfast with lake views before setting out on a boat excursion along Lake Kivu. Glide past small fishing villages and soak in the serenity of the water while observing local life. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are home to abundant birdlife, including pelicans, crowned cranes, and malachite kingfishers. After lunch, visit a tea plantation and explore roadside markets as you make your way to Gisenyi near the Congo border.

Begin the day early with a briefing at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. From here, set out on foot into the misty rainforest in search of Rwanda’s famed mountain gorillas. The trek can last from one to four hours depending on the gorillas’ movements, but the reward is immense—spending a full hour observing these majestic creatures up close in their natural habitat. After the experience, return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest.

Today offers a second chance to track a different gorilla family. Each encounter provides unique insights into the behaviors, personalities, and family structures of these great apes. After the trek, visit the nearby town of Ruhengeri, also known as Musanze. Built on an old lava field, the town sits between the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, offering breathtaking landscapes and cultural charm.

After an early breakfast, begin the scenic return journey to Kigali. Along the way, enjoy views of Lakes Burera and Ruhondo as the rolling hills give way to the bustle of the capital. Upon arrival in Kigali, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
